Understanding Parasites in Puppies

At Puppy Heaven, we know how much you care about your new puppy’s health and comfort. That’s why we’ve created this simple, transparent guide to help you understand common parasites, how deworming works, and what you can do to keep your puppy feeling great every day.

General Information

Parasites such as intestinal worms, Giardia, and Coccidia are very common in young puppies across the United States. Even with excellent breeder and veterinary supervision, puppies can naturally contract these organisms.

Deworming is an essential part of every puppy’s routine care. New puppy parents should continue deworming according to the schedule provided by their veterinarian and outlined in their puppy’s health documents.

Deworming helps ensure your puppy remains healthy, comfortable, and free from preventable intestinal problems that may affect appetite, growth, and overall well-being.

At Puppy Heaven, every puppy receives proper veterinary care and deworming before going home. However, it’s normal for some puppies to still test positive for minor intestinal parasites after adoption, as these organisms are common and sometimes reappear under stress or environmental changes.

⚠️ Please Note: Because parasites and deworming treatments are considered routine veterinary care, any worm-related issues are excluded under Section 3 of the Puppy Heaven Health Warranty Policy.

Puppy Heaven Guidelines & Recommendations for Parasite Care

1. Fecal Testing

Request a fecal test during your puppy’s first wellness exam (required under Section 1 of the Health Warranty Policy). If the test comes back positive, follow your veterinarian’s treatment plan. Once your puppy is cleared, there’s no need to continue the general deworming schedule listed in the warranty.

2. Hygiene Precautions

Until your puppy is confirmed parasite-free:

  • Avoid letting your puppy lick your or your family’s face.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly after handling your puppy.
  • Remind children to do the same.

Some parasites can be transmissible to humans through saliva or stool, so maintaining good hygiene is important for everyone’s safety.

3. Separation from Other Pets

If you have other pets at home:

  • Keep food and water bowls separate.
  • Prevent pets from licking or sniffing each other’s behinds.
  • Keep your new puppy separated for at least one week or until confirmed parasite-free by a veterinarian.

Parasites can spread between pets through saliva or stool, so a short separation helps protect everyone.

4. Feeding During Deworming

Puppies undergoing deworming may experience a temporary decrease in appetite. Monitor food intake carefully. If your puppy is not eating the minimum amount listed on the Puppy Heaven New Puppy Owner Observation Chart, please contact our team for advice.

5. Post-Treatment Cleaning

After treatment, thoroughly clean all items your puppy has slept on, played with, or chewed — including bedding, blankets, and toys — to prevent reinfection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it normal for my puppy to have worms after adoption?

Yes, it’s common for puppies to carry mild intestinal parasites. These are part of routine puppy care and can be easily managed with veterinary guidance.

Can my puppy get parasites again after deworming?

Yes. Puppies explore with their mouths and can pick up parasites again from the environment. Regular fecal checks and preventive care help avoid reinfection.

Can humans catch parasites from puppies?

Some parasites can be transmitted through contact with infected stool. Washing hands and avoiding face-licking are simple ways to stay safe.
